How healthy is coconut oil?
Answered by Ms Emily QUEK Senior Dietitian Department of Dietetics Singapore General Hospital
There have been many health claims made for the type of saturated fat found in coconut oil, although there is currently no concrete scientific data yet to support this. Dietary guidelines for saturated fat should be no more than 10% of total energy intake, so for a 1500-calorie diet, the saturated fat content should be no more than 150 calories, or just over a tablespoon.

Is it correct to say that we need only 50g of protein a day?
Answered by Ms Emily QUEK Senior Dietitian Department of Dietetics Singapore General Hospital
Protein requirements differ between individuals, depending on their age, gender, medical condition, etc. It is best to consult your dietitian or doctor if you are concerned about the amount of protein you should be consuming.

Is frying with monounsatured or polyunsaturated oils unhealthy?
Answered by Ms Emily QUEK Senior Dietitian Department of Dietetics Singapore General Hospital
Regardless of the type of oil used, the amount of calories remains the same - about 120 calories per tablespoon of oil. Frying is therefore not a preferable way of cooking. Try lower-fat cooking methods like stir-frying, grilling or steaming instead.
