​​Unlike other types of dementia, vascular dementia can be prevented by controlling its risk factors early. Vascular dementia has unique characteristics such as sudden loss of memory or sense of direction, a sudden deterioration of condition, and loss of ability to plan. Those who have had a stroke are also at higher risk of developing vascular dementia. An NNI study found that 70 to 80 per cent of dementia patients also have vascular dementia.
