“I was a paramedic in the Singapore Civil Defence Force. After seeing a nurse in action when we were both volunteering in Aceh after the tsunami in 2004, I made a mid-career switch.
I saw how the victims’ wounds quickly improved thanks to her nursing care, and I wanted to have that kind of knowledge and skills to help people too. Then 29 years old, I enrolled in nursing school with sponsorship from Ren Ci Hospital. Upon graduation 2 years later, I took care of patients in the ward before becoming a nurse educator in 2011.
To help foreign nurses cope better in the wards, I take time to hold remedial classes for them. I also help to translate nursing terms into Chinese for trainees from China.
Nursing is a physically and emotionally demanding job. We can prevent burnout by looking out for one another.”
