“Patients on long-term therapy may not be able to work and this may cause financial difficulty to some, and also affect them emotionally and psychologically during this long recovery process,” shared PEN Rokiah.
“We often underestimate our efforts and contributions. Every contribution made accumulates and it can help to support patients financially, fund medical research and training programmes to advance the care for our patients,” said PEN Rokiah (above).
Chronic heart conditions, like many diseases, can cause profound impact on our patients. Not only having to learn how to cope with their health conditions, some of our patients have to grapple with other emotional and financial concerns that inevitably affect their health.
“Patients on long-term therapy may not be able to work and this may cause financial difficulty to some, and also affect them emotionally and psychologically during this long recovery process,” shared Principle Enrolled Nurse (PEN) Rokiah Binte Sulaiman from Ward 56 who attends to heart patients on long term care. Some of these patients require the use of the Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) for life.
This is why many of our staff like PEN Rokiah and Senior Staff Nurse (SSN) Sin Kang Ling Kelly decided to support our patients by giving to the NHCS Heart To Heart Fund every month.
“We often underestimate our efforts and contributions. Every contribution made accumulates and it can help to support patients financially, fund medical research and training programmes to advance the care for our patients,” said PEN Rokiah.
“It was my dad who motivated me to give. One day while manning his economic rice stall, an old man who ordered his food realised that he did not have enough money to pay for it. Without hesitation, my dad offered the packet of rice to the old man. With his act of kindness etched in my mind, I grew to realise the good in helping those in need,” shared SSN Kelly from Cardiac Clinics.
“I support the Heart To Heart Fund with the hope that patients can receive better treatment in future. Research helps by challenging us to innovate and improve patient care, which can benefit both staff and patients.”
Both Rokiah and Kelly agree with the powerful quote by Mother Theresa, “It’s not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving.” No matter the amount, giving with love inspires hope which helps transform the lives of our patients.
Our nurses deserve a BIG thank you for their selfless gesture in filling the hearts of our patients! Their contributions not only help ease our patients’ financial and mental burden so that they can focus on getting well, most importantly, it allows them to know that they are not alone.
