Staff who receive multiple compliments from patients and colleagues are recognised with the Singapore Healthcare Quality Service Awards (SHQSA). However, 13 NNI staff members went beyond service excellence to receive the higher tier Star Award – among them was Dr Lin Xuling, Senior Consultant, Neurology – here’s why!
Dr Lin Xuling wears two different healthcare hats. In her work as a senior consultant neurologist, Dr Lin sees patients and their family members in the clinic, helping them to navigate the treatments and challenges of complex conditions including brain tumours.
Meanwhile, in her role as Director (Clinical), SingHealth Office of Regional Health, Dr Lin’s work is more administrative in nature, focusing on strategic planning, clinical governance and safety, and collaborations with partners to strengthen community healthcare networks.
The two roles appear vastly different, but they share one common purpose – to provide patients with the treatment and support they need to live as well as possible.
“Every patient is unique, requiring treatment and support tailored to their needs. It is deeply satisfying working with the team at NNI to manage patients, but there is only so much we can do in a short clinic consultation,” says Dr Lin. “My day-to-day encounters with patients and their families offer me an insight to the realities of healthcare – what works, what matters and where the procedures and systems need to improve.”
Many NNI patients are living with complex conditions that impact their daily lives. Dr Lin believes that the bulk of support they need should be provided by primary care and community facilities, which are more accessible and ensures long-term sustainability.
Sharing her hope for healthcare in Singapore, Dr Lin envisions a system that truly serves patients’ needs.
“I hope that we will be able to empower individuals and communities to take care of their health and to build a healthcare system that not only treats the illness, but also improves patients’ overall well-being,” says Dr Lin.
