Intern Sze En learnt the power of simple gestures of appreciation during SGH’s “Be an Angel Day”

By Ang Sze En and Jaime Teo

What is “Be An Angel Day”? How and why is it celebrated at SGH?

“Be An Angel Day” is dedicated to recognising and embodying acts of kindness at our workplace. Being an angel at work isn’t about grand gestures; it’s the little moments of compassion and understanding that truly make a difference. Whether it's a kind word, a helping hand, or a thoughtful gift, these acts remind our colleagues they are valued and appreciated.

A pleasant surprise

Together with my supervisor, Jaime from Communications, we embarked on an exciting journey to spread love around SGH’s campus. Our first stop was the Staff Health Screening at Deck On 9, followed by the Pre- Admission Centre. We then headed to the Staff Clinic before making our way to the Office of Patient Experience (OPE) at SingHealth Tower, ensuring that each visit left a trail of smiles and positivity. It’s a reminder that we can all make someone’s day a little brighter, just by showing that we care.

The Power of a simple gesture

As I walked through our campus with handwritten thank you notes and small gifts, I realised how these small gestures could brighten someone's day. Our colleagues were serious at work. But when we smiled at them, they all broke into a smile.

Though SGH’s Be An Angel Day was in August, let’s remember that kindness isn't just a once-a-year act; it’s a daily commitment; something we can all embody every day.

When we uplift one another, we create an environment where everyone feels valued. These small acts of kindness strengthen our sense of community, turning initial confusion – our colleagues were puzzled why we were giving them gifts and thanking them for their hard work - into genuine smiles of appreciation and reinforce our shared belonging at SGH.
