High blood pressure (hypertension) and diabetes are the two most common causes of chronic kidney disease. In Singapore, about 60 per cent of new end-stage renal disease cases are due to diabetes.

How to reduce your risk for chronic kidney disease:

  • Eat fruit, vegetables, grains and lean meat. Cut down on salt and fat.
  • Drink lots of water, and cut down on soft and alcoholic drinks.
  • Keep fit: Exercise at least five times a week and do not smoke.
  • Have regular health check-ups.
