Are you insulin safe? Your guide to insulin storage and needle disposal

When insulin is stored the right way, it works like it should, to keep you feeling your best. And when used needles are disposed of properly, it keeps everyone safe — at home and in the community.

Here’s an easy guide to help you store, and dispose of, your insulin pens and vials the smart way.

Let's dive in and learn from Pharmacist Soh Hui Yun and Pharmacy Technician Supervisor Nurwasilawaty Binte Abdul Roni, both from SingHealth Community Hospitals (SCH), a member of the SingHealth group, to find out more!

Proper storage of insulin

1. How to store unopened insulin

Insulin requires specific temperature control to remain effective until its expiration date.

  • Refrigeration is key: Store all unopened insulin pens and vials in the refrigerator at a temperature between 2°C to 8°C.

  • Avoid freezing: Do not store insulin near the freezer compartment or the back wall of the refrigerator. If the insulin becomes frozen, it must be discarded immediately!

  • Shelf life expectancy: Unopened insulin that is correctly stored in the refrigerator can last until the expiry date printed on the manufacturer’s label.

2. How to manage insulin that has been opened

Once an insulin pen or vial has been opened, storage requirements change.

  • Mark the date: Upon opening a new pen or vial, immediately write the current date on the label to track its lifespan.

  • Store at room temperature: Store in-use insulin at a maximum room temperature of 30°C.

  • Avoid direct heat contact: Keep the medication away from direct sunlight and excessive heat.

3. Take note of the expiration date of your insulin

Different insulin brands have varying shelf life once opened:

Maximum storage duration at room temperature:

Duration Insulin brands
4 weeks (28 days) Lantus, Novomix 30, Novorapid, Apidra, Humalog
6 weeks (42 days) Levemir, Toujeo

4. When to dispose of your insulin

Discard the insulin immediately if you observe any of the following:

  • If you see clumps, crystals, or discoloration of the liquid.
  • If a normally clear insulin solution appears cloudy.
  • If the 4-week or 6-week time limit has passed.

Proper disposal of insulin needles

Improper disposal of syringes and needles poses a significant injury risk to your loved ones and the community. Follow these steps to dispose of these "sharps" responsibly!

  1. Do not dispose in general and reycling bins: Never throw loose syringes or needles directly into general rubbish or recycling bins.

  2. Instead, select a proper container: Use a designated medical "Sharps" container. If one is unavailable, use a hard, puncture-resistant household container with a screw-top lid, such as a heavy-duty laundry detergent bottle.

  3. Secure and label the container: When the container is full, screw the lid on tightly and secure it with tape. Clearly label the exterior: “SHARPS - DO NOT RECYCLE”.

  4. Final disposal: Place the sealed and labelled container into the general rubbish bin.
