"Making the transition from research assistant to PhD student is never easy.  I used to assist others when I was a Research Assistant.  However, I now have to drive my own project, derive new scientific questions and plan my own experiments.  Doing a PhD is like learning how to ride a bicycle on your own – it requires a lot of independent learning along with a couple of painful falls.  I often found myself running into brick walls when I first started out, but I am lucky because I could always rely on my colleagues and mentor for help."
