The SingHealth clinicians are two out of four winners of this year's Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Welfare Foundation (MSIWF) research grant, totaling $38,000.
Dr Tan Ngiap Chuan, Senior Consultant and Director, Research at SingHealth Polyclinics and Dr Kinjal Doshi, Principal Clinical Psychologist at Singapore General Hospital will be using the grant to tackle welfare issues among the elderly, within their respective specialties.
The SingHealth clinicians are two out of four winners of this year's Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Welfare Foundation (MSIWF) research grant, totaling $38,000.
Dr Tan's proposed study aims to find out the prevalence of age-related loss of muscle mass and muscle function, or sarcopenia, among elderly patients. The findings will allow healthcare professionals to identify factors that lead to sarcopenia and develop solutions that can help prevent, slow down or reverse the condition.
Dr Doshi will be creating a better tool to better identify loss of functional abilities among the elderly and find out the different ways family members provide care for their elderly relatives with or without cognitive impairment.
The award was presented on 20 January 2017. The winning researchers will be conducting their research over the next 12 months and their findings will be published in scientific journals as well as shared at next year's MSIWF presentation ceremony.
