SINGAPORE NATIONAL EYE CENTRE ORGANISES 16TH NATIONAL EYE CARE DAY
- AND LAUNCHES TIME CAPSULE TO MARK ITS 25TH ANNIVERSARY

Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) together with the eye departments of the restructured hospitals organised the 16th National Eye Care Day on Saturday 21 November 2015. Mr Chan Chun Sing, Minister, Prime Minister’s Office graced the event as Guest-of-Honour at the opening ceremony held at the SNEC.

The event also coincides with SNEC’s 25th Anniversary since its founding in 1990. Mr Chan also launched a time-capsule – to be opened in 2040 at SNEC’s golden jubilee anniversary.  This is the 16th consecutive year that Singapore National Eye Centre is organising this major community event. This event aims to promote public awareness of the common eye conditions and the importance of preventive eye care through free general eye screening and public talks on common eye conditions.

Over the years, more than 30,000 members of public have received eye screening on this annual event, conceptualised by SNEC. This year’s event is jointly organised with the ophthalmology departments of National University Hospital, Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Changi General Hospital, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital and Ng Teng Fong General Hospital.

The focus this year is eyecare for seniors. More than 2,200 people will have their eye screened and more than half of this screening will be performed at the SNEC. Participants will be screened for age-related eye conditions such as cataract and glaucoma. This is perhaps the largest mass eye screening event to be held in Singapore.

The National Eye Care Day is supported by the Ministry of Health, Singapore Health Services (SingHealth), the National University health System (NUHS), National Healthcare Group (NHG), Alexandra Health, Eastern health Alliance and Jurong Health Services, Singapore Eye Foundation and with the participation of the Singapore Eye Research Institute.

Significant items include the 25th Anniversary commemorative book which summarises the developments of SNEC and the achievements of the doctors, nurses and staff over the years since 1990.
