I am a curious person, which is probably why I chose anaesthesia. This specialty gave me the opportunity to learn from both medical and surgical disciplines. Training and working in SGH gave me the unique opportunity to be in touch with all the specialties, be involved in new things that come into practice and to see the latest in machines and technology.

This curiousity to learn new things all the time also drew me to look at processes and systems through the eyes of JCI and patient safety. I was very excited when given the opportunity to start the patient safety movement and set-up the clinical governance structure. Although the journey was challenging, I had a lot of support and I truly believe that this brought the culture of excellence to the next level.  The diversity, vibrancy and energy of the people in SGH gave me plenty of opportunity to grow and learn to work with different teams and people. It taught me the value of passion, resilience and focusing on what is really important.

Patient safety is core to excellent delivery of healthcare. It is something patients can understand and, in fact, play an important role in too. I am sure we will continue to be true to this mission of providing the best care for all our patients and to be open to reporting and bringing up issues in a gentle and positive manner.
