"Nuclear Medicine is a niche specialty and many people assume that we are Radiologists or Radiation Oncologists. The truth is our work straddles both diagnostic and therapeutic medicine and a key principle that underlies our practice is a keen understanding of the physiological basis of diseases.

Nuclear Medicine physicians interpret scans (such as PET-CT, thyroid and bone scans) done for patients with either cancer or benign conditions. Scans in Nuclear Medicine primarily assess the function of diseases. It’s a very dynamic field with ongoing development of targeted scans evaluating specific conditions and tumours. Recently, our department introduced new scans with promising results for the evaluation of Alzheimer’s dementia and prostate cancer.

We also participate in multidisciplinary teams to determine the ideal course of treatment for patients. For treatments we administer, we work very closely with other departments. Another important part of our work is imparting of skills, principles and values to our junior Nuclear Medicine physicians and Radiologists which not only helps develop them into qualified specialists, it also helps keep our own clinical skills up to date."
