Dr Victor Kwok, Head and Consultant, Department of Psychiatry, SKH, shared that midlife crisis is not a scientific diagnosis although it could be associated with psychiatry. People should not be overly concerned as it is not as prevalent as it seems and there are ways to overcome it. People in their midlife may deal with a range of problems that may cause extreme stress and burden, increasing the risk of developing depression. Should these stressors result in sleep disorders, loss of appetite, or an inability to perform daily activities, they may be suffering from depression and should seek medical attention. In general, Dr Kwok encourages positive thinking, lending others a listening ear without being judgmental or critical, and having hobbies and a support network.
