"During the first year of my work, more than 20 years ago, I met a young patient in her teens. Like many renal patients, her life improved dramatically after a kidney transplant. However, little did I know that I had made a significant impact on her and would influence her subsequent decision to become a social worker.
It is my belief that life deserves to be lived meaningfully and compassionately, and social work allows me to do that. Plus, social work is enriching too. People often think of MSWs as almoners and givers. The truth is that we are receivers too: drawing lessons from our patients and their families, as well as strength and courage from their resilience as they overcome adversities in life. That they confide in us their innermost thoughts, feelings, fears and aspirations signals trust and I value the connection I have with them. These keep my passion going.
At the close of one life, new beginnings in many lives are made possible through organ and tissue donation and transplantation. I hope for Singaporeans to be more open-minded and positive towards organ and tissue donations. Individuals should start talking about their organ and tissue donation preferences with their family. Having such conversations will enable the family to be prepared and to facilitate their loved one’s wishes should the time come."
