Dr Chuah Tyng Yu, Consultant, Department of General Medicine, SKH, contributed an essay on gout – a painful form of arthritis caused by the formation of uric acid crystals in and around the joints. Gout is the most common type of inflammatory arthritis in the world, with cases increasingly on the rise. According to a study, the number of gout cases has more than tripled during the 20-year period studied. Contrary to popular belief, gout is most common in men between 30 and 50 years of age and is not just a condition that older men face. Dr Chuah also shared on managing gout through Urate-Lowering Therapy (ULT), leading a healthy lifestyle, and taking medication as prescribed. The essay concluded with an invitation to SKH's upcoming Community Health Fair on Saturday, 31 August 2024, at Fernvale Community Club from 11am to 8pm.
