Changi General Hospital and global medical device company Medtronic International Ltd signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 6 February 2018 to establish CREST @ CGH (Centre of Excellence for Spine surgery Training).
According to Dr Dinesh Shree Kumar, Director of Spine Surgery, CGH, “With the launch of CREST @ CGH, we aim to train current and future generations of spine surgeons in technology-aided minimally invasive surgery techniques so that more patients can benefit from advances in spine surgery.”

“Minimally invasive surgery is a suitable option for spine surgeries because it results in faster recovery with less blood loss, and lower risk of complications for patients. It has also become safer, more effective and more precise over the years with technological advances such as surgical imaging systems that enable surgeons to visualise the surgical field in real time,” Dr Dinesh added.
Experienced regional spine surgeons interested in technology enabled spine surgery can attend a Visiting Clinician Programme at CGH. They will observe surgeries, understand surgical workflows, and participate in case discussions.
Younger surgeons looking to subspecialise in spine surgery can apply for a 6-month to one-year clinical fellowship. In addition, CREST @ CGH will conduct workshops focused on skills training orthopaedic and neurosurgical residents annually.
Apart from training, CGH and Medtronic will explore further collaborations to co-create solutions to make spine surgery more effective, efficient and safer.
