Spreading postive vibes to one another

Are essential oils, essential?

As soon as I caught a whiff of the spa-like scent of essential oils, I felt relaxed almost immediately and my mood lifted. Going by the mood of my fellow colleagues at the mid-week aromatherapy workshop organised by the SingHealth Worklife Committee, I can sense that they probably felt the same.

Being totally new to aromatherapy, I was curious to find out how essential oils can help reduce stress, create joy and improve wellness.

Trainer Ruby showing attendees the proper massage technique

According to the trainer, Ruby, aromatherapy is the practice of using plant oils for psychological and physical well-being. One of the most recognised natural and holistic therapies around the world, aromatherapy is an age-old practice with roots dating back to almost 6,000 years ago!* When used correctly, it can address various issues relating to our mood, skin, muscles, immune system and more.

Essential oils used in aromatherapy are highly concentrated plant extracts. I was surprised to learn that it takes around 242,000 rose petals to distill approximately 5ml of pure rose oil!* As such, only a small amount is needed to induce benefit.

Relatively easy to use, the oils can be diffused into the air, added to a hot bath or even dripped sparingly on to your pillow before turning in.

Pure essential oils are often too strong for use topically. However, carrier oils, such as the protein-rich almond oil which is good for relaxing tense muscles, can be used to dilute essential oils before applying it to the skin. Massaging the area where the oil is applied can boost circulation and increase absorption.

With an infinite amount of essential oils and blends, how will you know which works for you? Here's a guide on the oils that can help invigorate your mind and body:
