Flu (Influenza) Prevention: Vaccination and Tips

Dr Ling Moi Lin, Director of Infection Prevention & Epidemiology from Singapore General Hospital (SGH), a member of the SingHealth group, shares tips to stay safe during the flu season.

As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure, so here are some tips to reduce your probability of getting the flu.

Self care during the flu season

  • Get the flu vaccinated before flu season begins
(in Singapore, flu season is from May-July and October-February)

  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue or do it into your upper sleeve, not into your hands. Then, clean your hands and do so every time you cough or sneeze.

  • Wash your hands with soap and water frequently, including before and after eating (anti-bacterial soap is not necessary). Rub hands vigorously for at last 20 seconds covering all surfaces
(Sing the "Happy Birthday" song to know roughly how long 20 seconds take)

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches their eyes, nose or mouth.

  • Clean and disinfect high-touch areas such as your phone, keyboard, mouse, remotes, door handles etc (use at least low-level disinfectants and not just antibacterial wipes)

  • Eat healthily and exercise frequently. Drink plenty of water. Do not smoke.

  • Avoid crowded areas

  • If you are ill, stay home so you do not spread the illness to others.

Who should get vaccinated (and who shouldn't)?

Everyone should get vaccinated! The only exceptions are those who have had a previous severe reaction, or have a history of the Guillain Barre Syndrome or other neurological disorder within 6 weeks of receiving the influenza vaccine.

There have also been studies that show the flu vaccine is also beneficial for pregnant women and those with cardio-vascular disease.

Fun fact before we leave you : There are currently 3 ways that the flu vaccine is produced (egg-based, cell-based and recombinant). So even if you are allergic to eggs, you could ask your doctor for a cell-based or recombinant option!
