Tips to Prevent Hepatitis A Infection

Hepatitis A ​can spread through contact with contaminated food and drinks.

Dr Limin Wijaya, Senior Consultant, Department of Infectious Diseases, Singapore General Hospital (SGH), a member of the SingHealth group, offers the following tips to reduce your risk of infection:

  • Wash your hands with soap and water after using the toilet and before preparing any food and drinks
  • Avoid sharing eating utensils, drinking glasses, toothbrushes and other personal items

When travelling overseas…

  • Avoid eating raw fruits and vegetables, and raw shellfish
  • Avoid iced drinks or adding ice to your drinks
  • Drink bottled water or boil water before drinking
  • Brush your teeth and rinse your mouth with bottled water
  • Avoid eating at unhygienic places
  • Get a hepatitis A vaccination before travelling

The SGH Travel Clinic is run by specialists from the Department of Infectious Diseases. It is a designated Yellow Fever Centre. The team of doctors and nurses will offer comprehensive travel advice and country-specific recommendations prior to your trip.
