• When one of the arteries that supplies blood to the retina becomes blocked the blood flow is reduced
• This damage to the eye can cause visual problems if not treated early
• People with diabetes are more likely to become blind than people without diabetes
• After 5 years of diabetes many patients (80%) show signs of retinopathy
• In the early stage of damage to the eye, there will not be any symptoms
• Early detection and laser treatment for retinopathy cuts down the risk of blindness by 90%

• A cataract is the clouding of the normally transparent lens of the eye, which results in blurred vision
Glaucoma
• Glaucoma, the buildup of fluid in the eye, causes increased pressure and can damage the optic nerve thatis responsible for vision
How To Protect Your Eyes
• Take good care of your precious eyes by having them examined at least once a year after the first eye examination
• Aim for good diabetes control (HbA1C less than or equals7%)
• Have your blood pressure checked regularly and keep it within the healthy range
• Take your medications as prescribed by the doctor
• Remember to keep your appointment with the doctor
• Get early treatment for your eye problem
