VBAC (Vaginal Birth After C-Section): What You Need to Know

VBAC (Vaginal Birth After C-Section) may still be an option for mothers who had a previous c-section. Be sure to check with your doctor.

"Women who had a previous C-section may be still be suitable for VBAC. Consult your doctor."

This was advised by the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at KK Women's and Children's Hospital (KKH), a member of the SingHealth group.

What is VBAC?

VBAC is the acronym for Vaginal Birth After Cesarean section.

What is my chance of VBAC?

The chance of a successful VBAC resulting in a natural delivery is 50-60%. This may be higher if you previously had natural deliveries.

Why should I consider VBAC?

As natural delivery is still feasible in properly selected cases, you can avoid a repeat C-section and the surgical risks. In addition, you can have another VBAC in next pregnancy.

What are my risks for VBAC?

The main worry is the risk of scar rupture. But don't worry as the risk is only 0.5% after one previous C-section. Unfortunately, scar rupture is life-threatening for both mother and baby. It may even lead to a hysterectomy and brain injury to baby.

If you desire VBAC and your doctor deems you suitable for this, you will be closely monitored for a trial of labour. However, if the labour is not progressing or baby in distress, an emergency C-section is warranted.

Is epidural pain relief allowed?

Yes, you can! Epidural is absolutely safe for VBAC.
