Who says oatmeal has to be boring? With a tad of creativity, you can enjoy a delicious breakfast to brighten up your mornings. Dietitians from SingHealth Community Hospitals (SCH) share the recipe.
In part two of this special six-part series, dietitians from
SingHealth Community Hospitals (SCH), a member of the
SingHealth group, share healthy and easy-to-prepare breakfast recipes to help you start your day right.
Strawberry & Banana Oat (5-minute preparation time)
This fuss free, easy-to-prepare breakfast (takes just five minutes to prepare) is packed with a lot of health benefits, giving you the energy you need to last straight to lunch time!
“Strawberry and banana belong to the same food group which are rich in insoluble and soluble fibers. These
fibers are important to improve your bowel health, reduce the risk of colon cancer and help to control your blood glucose better,” shared Edward Chan, Senior Dietitian from
SingHealth Community Hospitals (SCH) .
Oatmeal on the other hand contains mostly soluble fiber. Several studies have shown that consuming oatmeal in the right amount will help to reduce your cholesterol level.
You can also replace strawberry with other types of berries such as blueberry or raspberry and oatmeal with quinoa or barley!
Ingredients and preparation steps
Ingredients (for 1 serving)
1/3 Cup of rolled oats |
1 Banana (cut into halves) |
1 Cup of low-fat milk |
5 Strawberries |
1 Teaspoon of chia seeds |
1/2 Teaspoon of cinnamon powder (if required) |
Steps
1. Combine milk, oats, mashed banana (half the fruit), chopped strawberries (3 whole) and chia seeds into a medium saucepan and bring to a boil.
2. Lower the heat to low or medium and continually stir for about 3 minutes until the oat thickens and reaches the desired consistency.
3. Pour the mixture into a bowl and top it with the sliced banana (the other half of the fruit) and chopped strawberries (2 whole).
4. Sprinkle with cinnamon if desired and serve warm.
5. Alternatively, you can mix all base ingredients together and heat up for 2 minutes in the microwave.
