Be the LIGHT: Crisis Support for Children and Youth [BTL (7 to 18)]

Be the LIGHT: Crisis Support for Children and Youth is a training programme that equips you with essential skills to support children and youth aged 7 to 18 years old, in the crucial days and weeks following crisis and trauma events. BTL (7 to 18) is offered at two levels, Level 1 and 2.

IMPORTANT NOTE: BTL (7 to 18) Level 1 and Level 2 are not certification courses in counselling or therapy.

Be the LIGHT: Crisis Support for Children and Youth Level 1

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

In Level 1, you will learn about the LIGHT framework, to facilitate a conversation with a child to identify difficulties they may be facing post-crisis, teach coping strategies, identify those who require professional intervention, and facilitate referrals to appropriate services. Level 1 training is sufficient for participants to be equipped with skills to provide individual support to children and youths in distress after crisis. 

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

We offer BTL (7 to 18) Level 1 in two learning formats:

Option 1: Full Face-to-Face

  • 2 full days of in-person training

Option 2: Blended Learning

  • E-learning module: 4 to 4.5 hours (self-paced)
  • 1 full day of in-person skills training. Note: Completion of the e-learning module is mandatory before attending the in-person session 

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

  • Identify stress responses in children after a crisis
  • Learn techniques to help children cope post-crisis
  • Develop skills for carrying out supportive conversations with children
  • Use screening tools to monitor children’s progress
  • Learn when, where and how to refer children to professional help 

PUTTING LEARNING INTO PRACTICE

To consolidate your learning and build confidence in using the framework, we strongly encourage you to apply the LIGHT framework with at least three children following the training. This practical application will help reinforce your skills and enhance your effectiveness in supporting children through crisis situations. 

WHO SHOULD JOIN?

  • Anyone passionate about supporting children through crisis situations
  • Individuals working with children and youth
  • No prior mental health or counselling experience required

Be the LIGHT: Crisis Support for Children and Youth Level 2

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

In Level 2, build on the skills learnt in Level 1 and deepen your understanding of trauma responses. Additionally, learn how to apply the LIGHT framework to children in groups.

We offer BTL (7 to 18) Level 2 in two learning formats:

  • Understanding Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and Childhood Traumatic Grief
  • Strategies to teach caregivers to respond supportively to their child post-crisis
  • Application of the LIGHT framework in group settings
  • Skills for managing group dynamics

WHO SHOULD JOIN?

  • Professionals working with children and youths (e.g. counsellors, youth workers, social workers, psychologists, etc.)
  • Must have completed Be the LIGHT: Crisis Support for Children and Youth Level 1
