Be the LIGHT: Crisis Support for Children and Youth

Be the LIGHT: Crisis Support for Children and Youth is a training programme that equips adults with a framework to provide support to children and youths in distress in the days to weeks after crises. Participants will be equipped with skills that facilitate a conversation with a child regarding difficulties they are facing. Additionally, participants will also learn how to identify children who require professional support, and refer them to the appropriate professionals.

Note: This is not a certification course in counselling or therapy.

The Psychosocial Trauma Support Service in KKH provides a Be the LIGHT: Crisis Support for Children and Youth Training Programme to individuals in Singapore. This training programme is offered at 2 levels. Level 1 involves a 2-day training course, and Level 2 involves a 1-day training course. Participation in Level 1 is sufficient for participants to be equipped with the skills to provide support to children and youths in distress.

Level 1

Learning objectives

  • Identify stress responses in children after a crisis
  • Learn techniques to help children cope post-crisis

Who should apply?

  • Anyone with a passion for helping children cope with distress after crises
  • No mental health/counselling experience required

Level 2

Learning objectives

  • Learn about the symptoms of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and Childhood Traumatic Grief
  • Learn additional techniques to help children and their caregivers cope post-crisis\
  • Learn ways to support children in group settings

Who should apply?

  • Professionals working with children and youths (e.g. counsellors, youth workers, social workers, psychologists, etc.)
  • Must have completed Be the LIGHT: Crisis Support for Children and Youth Level 1
