The days of the “eccentric hermit philosopher” are long gone. Today’s research is a team game

"In my experience, the most motivating environment for training is one in which you are surrounded by smart, energetic and enthusiastic people, all of whom are fully committed to making a difference.  By exposing yourself to almost daily examples of incisive "out-of-the-box" thinking and high calibre science, it inevitably stimulates you to achieve more than you ever thought possible.  The days of the "eccentric hermit philosopher" are long gone. Today's research is a team game!

Most young clinicians I encounter understand  that continued research is the proven way for delivering the highest quality care.  However, passion is a fragile flower that needs constant nurturing and protection from the harsh "realities" of the world - pressures of family, career progression, inevitable self-doubt and the cacophony of advice telling you to be "more practical". Identifying our brightest minds and supporting their progress in the clinic and the lab is critical  – as is finding the balance between the space and time needed for creativity and the demands for productivity."
